Jessica Anderson tells the Daily News that 7-year-old Joseph was taken in metal cuffs to the hospital even though she told the school she was on her way to get him. She says the boy was upset and kept asking for "Mommy."
"Why handcuff him?" Anderson asked the paper. "Why get the cops involved? He's only 7."
"They know that my son is special ed. It's like they're trying to get rid of him, and it worked, because I'm not sending him back there," she added.
Police and education officials defended the decision to restrain the child.Police told the News the boy started spitting and cursing and was acting in a threatening manner.
Department of Education spokeswoman Marge Feinberg said the school tried to defuse the situation but called for help when there was a concern he would hurt himself or others.
The incident occurred on April 13 at P.S. 153 in Maspeth, Queens.
