Gov. Snyder Expected To Pass I'm Sorry' Law - Detroit Metro, MI Local News

LANSING (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to sign legislation aimed at providing some legal protection to medical providers who express sympathy or compassion to patients or their families.

The Republican governor is scheduled to sign a bill Tuesday that says a statement conveying sympathy or benevolence related to pain, suffering or death can’t be used as evidence of admitting liability in a medical malpractice suit.

Many states already have enacted the so-called “I’m sorry” laws. Supporters say the laws allow and encourage doctors to express sorrow without fear their words will be taken as self-incrimination.

The law would not apply to a statement of negligence or culpable conduct that is part of or made in addition to a statement of sympathy.

The legislation is Senate Bill 53.

So I'm disabled because a doctor here in Michigan (who may have been drunk at the time of the surgery, eh Flannagan?) cut me open and didn't stitch me together right leaving a nice hole in my abdominal wall and nearly causing me to bleed to death internally. I can't stretch, I can't bend or twist, sit or sleep certain ways without feeling like a goddamned spear is lodged in my right abdomen that is being twisted round and round. If that sounds bad, it's because it is. Coupled with my several psychological issues (PTSD, suicidal ideation, panic-anxiety disorder and agoraphobia), this has made me a very unhappy individual.

I tried to sue the good doctor but each and every lawyer told me the same thing: Since Republicans passed tort reform, unless you can prove that the docotr intended to maliciously fuck you up you couldn't sue them. Worse, several lawyers knew who Flannagan was by reputation and I, apparently, wasn't his first victim and, unfortunately, not his last as, to my knowledge, he is still practicing medicine at a reputable local hospital.

Now I read this and I can't help but screaming at the top of my lungs. Here I am relying on happy pills to keep me alive because the pain hurts so bad that, when not on said pills, I plot ways to end my suffering once and for all and here goes Michigan plotting yet another angle to let bad doctors off the hook.

Now I'm not going to bellyache (pun intended) about the fairness or lack thereof for such nonsense but if anyone wonders why I could throttle Republicans or choke the shit out of rich folk (because the good doctor has cash believe me) then look no further than the shit I endure every day. Now they want to take away Medicare (which pays for my pills and doctor visits; thank goodness for the U of M!) and fuck up Social Security (my only means of income). This is tantamount to a death sentence to me.
