CHICAGO—
The family of a 13-year-old shot by Chicago Police last night claim the shooting was not justified.
Relatives of Jimmell Cannon said he was out last night to celebrate a cousin's birthday in West Humboldt Park. Chicago Police responded to a report of "shots fired" at around 11 p.m. near the 1000 block of North Kedvale Avenue when they spotted the teen and approached him to conduct an interview.
But according to Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden, the boy ran away and had a pistol in his hand, refusing several orders to drop the weapon. At least one officer opened fire.
Cannon's family says he was shot eight times, twice in the hand, once in each shoulder and four times in the legs.
He remains in stable condition at Stroger Hospital.
The injuries are described as non-life threatening. Andrea McClay claims to have witnessed the incident. She said Jimmell had his hands up and was not armed when police shot him. His mother Kenyata Cannon says Jimmell is a good student who enjoys playing basketball and was set to start the 7th grade at Piccolo School.
According to police, a weapon was recovered from the scene.
